Before getting on your motorcycle
Check behind for traffic and other road users.
Your feet on the footrests
Rest the arches on them, toes pointing ahead over the gear lever and brake pedal.
Maximum slack in the drive chain
20 mm. A loose chain can come off and lock the rear wheel.
The throttle sticks while riding in traffic
Pull in the clutch, switch off the engine and brake.
The side stand is quicker and easier; the main stand holds the motorcycle upright, useful for chain cleaning or narrow spaces.
A correctly adjusted motorcycle mirror
You see the tip of your shoulder at its lower edge. Adjust it while seated, not on the main stand.
Grip the fuel tank lightly.
Arm angle when gripping the handlebar
About 120 degrees, elbows slightly bent and shoulders relaxed.
Being seen when riding in the dark
Wear a white helmet and reflective, bright clothing.
For a firm grip and to protect your hands in a fall.
Who must wear an approved helmet
Both the rider and the pillion rider, with the chin strap fastened.
