The engine overheats while driving
Hazard lights on, slow down, stop at the roadside (the shoulder on an expressway) and let the engine cool before opening the radiator cap.
Following distance on stony roads
Keep further back: stones from the wheels in front can break your windscreen.
Hazard lights on, apply the handbrake and change down quickly (preferably to 2nd) to use engine braking, then stop at the side.
An accident with no injuries
Move the vehicles safely to the roadside and settle it among yourselves; no police report is needed. Still report it to your insurer within 24 hours or by the next working day.
The accelerator pedal is stuck
Try to lift it with the toe of your shoe. If that fails, hazard lights on, move to the side, stop and switch off the ignition.
The car pulls towards that side, more strongly for a front tyre. Grip the wheel firmly, steer against the pull, brake gently and stop at the roadside.
Your vehicle breaks down while moving
First keep control; then warn others with horn, headlights and hazard lights, and move to the side when safe.
The bonnet flies up while driving
Stay calm, brake smoothly and stop at the side of the road to close it.
What can make the engine overheat
Poor maintenance, such as a radiator leak, low engine oil or a snapped fan belt.
The vehicle rocks from side to side with noise from the wheel, and the steering gets heavy. Slow down, stop safely and tighten it.
Always stop, whether or not anyone is hurt, and switch on the hazard lights.
An accident in which someone is injured
Call the police and an ambulance, warn other road users, and do not move your vehicle without police authority unless it is necessary.
Hazard lights on, slow down, move to the side (the shoulder on an expressway), stop and remove the broken glass with a cloth, then drive slowly to a workshop.
A short circuit in the vehicle's electrical system
It can cause a fire: stop at the roadside, get everyone well away, and use an extinguisher or call 995.
